I. Introduction

Earlier this year, Casino.org reported on the Louisiana state plans to move riverboat casinos onshore. Now the senate committee has approved the bill, so let’s pay tribute to these historic icons. The Louisiana Riverboat Casinos Inches Closer To Ashore Thanks To Task Force Recommendation. There are chances that 15 riverboat casinos in Louisiana may head inland. Above all, this is likely to happen if the state accepts the Task Force’s recommendation. But for the Louisiana casino industry to see this to happen, time is of the essence. Now, riverboat casinos are legalized in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and Texas. In some states, the casino riverboats actually sail along the sea, while others are anchored permanently and never leave the dock.

The negative stereotypes often associated with casinos of the past have given way to a booming industry that is being readily accepted into mainstream America. Cities across the United States are voting to build new casinos in their areas. Casinos generate large percentages of revenue for local and state governments across the country, especially along the Gulf Coast. The revenue received in Louisiana helps to support state and local projects that all citizens benefit from, such as roadways and public education. By increasing the number of commercial casinos in Louisiana we can in turn increase the amount of money available for development.

Casinos in Louisiana

Louisiana is home to three types of casinos: riverboat casinos, Native American casinos, and one land-based casino.

In 1991 Louisiana approved riverboat casino gambling, it was actually the fourth state in the U.S. to legalize it. In 1991 the law only allowed for a maximum of 15 riverboats to operate statewide. A year later, in 1992, New Orleans added a provision to allow for the one land-based casino, Harrah’s New Orleans.

In Louisiana there are three Native American Indian land-based casinos, and four slot machine-only casinos located at pari-mutuel facilities. In Louisiana video poker is permitted at Louisiana truck stops, bars/taverns, and OTB’s are in over half of the state’s 64 parishes (counties).

The minimum gambling age for all casinos in Louisiana is 21, and it is 18 for pari-mutuel betting.
